Rains lashed various parts of the country on July 19, killing at least eight people in Jammu.
The water level of the Yamuna in Delhi breached the danger mark again on Wednesday, less than 12 hours after it dropped below the threshold, amid rains in the national capital and the upper reaches of the river. The IMD predicted intermittent rain in the city over the next four to five days.
Heavy rains lashed parts of Maharashtra, affecting train services. Authorities evacuated people from low-lying areas of Thane and Palghar districts as incessant rain led to a number of rivers including the Ulhas (Thane), Amba, Savitri and Patalganga (in neighbouring Raigad) being in spate.
Flood-like situation was also reported from large parts of Gujarat, including Rajkot, Surat and Gir Somnath districts, that had received heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday.

Eight dead as heavy rains create flood-like situation in Jammu, many rivers breach danger mark
Eight people, including five children and two women, were killed as heavy rains battered most parts of Jammu division, creating a flood-like situation at many places on Wednesday, officials said.
The chopper and battery car service at the famous Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills was suspended amid record-breaking rainfall, while the schools in various districts were closed for the day and the traffic movement on vital highways witnessed disruption, they said.
The officials said rivers and rivulets at many places, especially in Kathua, Samba and Jammu districts, have reached close to or crossed the flood alert level, leaving many low-lying areas inundated.
Though there was some sort of relief from the heavy rainfall in the afternoon, the weather office has predicted more rains in the region for the coming days.
Eight persons, including five children and two women, were killed in rain-related incidents which resulted in the collapse of two houses and triggered several landslides in Bani Tehsil of Kathua district, deputy Commissioner, Rakesh Minhas told PTI.

Four die in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh
Four people were killed in rain-related incidents in the 24 hours ended at 6 pm on Wednesday, the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner said in a statement.
While one person each died due to drowning in Varanasi and Shravasti, one was killed by snakebite in Kanpur Dehat. Another person died due to man-animal conflict in Bijnor, it said.
According to the Irrigation Department, the Ganga is flowing above the danger mark in Budaun and the Yamuna in Mathura.
In Uttar Pradesh, 38,996 people in 426 villages in 14 districts — Agra, Aligarh, Bijnor, Budaun, GB Nagar, Farrukhabad, Firozabad, Ghaziabad, Mathura, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Shahjahanpur and Shamli — have been affected by floods. – PTI

Mumbai: Suburban train services restored
The Central Railway’s suburban train services on the Kalyan-Badlapur stretch in Maharashtra’s Thane district, adjoining Mumbai, were restored after seven hours on Wednesday, officials said. Services on the Kalyan-Kasara route were up and running after nearly three hours.
Services between Badlapur and Ambarnath were stopped at 11.05 hours due to waterlogging which disrupted the movement of trains from Kalyan to Karjat. Mumbai and Thane district received heavy downpours on Wednesday.
Point failures between Kalyan and Kasara prompted railway officials to stop the services on the stretch at around 2.40 p.m.
The disruptions caused inconvenience to thousands of commuters. Since trains crawled or stood still on tracks, several commuters were seen walking on rail lines to reach the nearest station.
According to Rajnish Kumar Goyal, divisional manager of Central Railway’s Mumbai division, the Ambarnath-Badlapur stretch, which is part of the Kalyan-Karjat section, was opened for traffic around 6 pm.
He said that the Down (Karjat-bound) line was restored first followed by the Up line (CSMT-bound) about half an hour later. – PTI

Infant falls into drain as woman loses grip while walking on railway tracks in rain-hit Thane district
A four-month-old infant slipped out of the hands of a woman walking on railway tracks and fell into a nullah between Thakurli and Kalyan stations near Mumbai on Wednesday as heavy rains disrupted local train services. A video shows a local train halted on a small bridge and a woman, accompanied by a man, crying for help while pointing out at a swollen drain flowing below. Commuters on the train can be heard saying that the woman’s baby has fallen into the nullah and swept away.
A Fire Brigade official said they have received a distress call about a child falling into the nullah along the railway track in Thane district and are launching an operation to trace the baby. Train services between the Kalyan and Kasara section in Thane district were stopped on Wednesday afternoon due to a track changing point failure at Kalyan station after heavy rains in the area, a senior railway official said.
As trains stopped in tracks, many commuters walked on tracks to reach the nearest railway stations.
Meanwhile, in Bhiwandi city of Thane district, a 14-year-old girl drowned in a swollen drain while her 12-year-old brother was rescued by people, a civic official said.
The incident occurred in the afternoon when the brother-sister duo was walking home after attending school, the official said.
The body of the girl was fished out from the water later, the official said. – PTI

Rains lash Telangana for second day; govt gears up to tackle situation
Rains continued to lash Telangana for the second consecutive day on Wednesday bringing much needed relief to farmers following scanty rainfall so far this season.
The government has geared up to deal with the situation in view of the forecast of heavy rains during the next few days.
The Met Centre of IMD in Hyderabad said the Southwest Monsoon has been vigorous over Telangana.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in Bhadradri- Kothagudem district, it said in its Daily Weather Report of Telangana (at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday).
Heavy rainfall occurred at a few places in Adilabad and Mulugu districts and at isolated places in Kamareddy, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Warangal and other districts in the state, it said. – PTI

Tree branch, timely help save life of man who fell into swollen river in Kalyan
A 20-year-old man clung to a tree branch for about an hour in swirling waters of Waldhuni river in Kalyan city in Thane district of Maharashtra before he was rescued on Wednesday, an official said.
The man fell into the river while walking on a flooded road amid heavy rains at around 3 pm, a Fire Brigade official said.
On receiving the information, a team of Fire Brigade personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the man, he added. – PTI

Heavy rains, thunderstorm likely in Chamba, Kangra districts, says IMD
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a warning with predictions of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms likely to occur at most places in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba, Kangra districts.
“Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms very likely to occur at most places in the districts of Chamba, Kangra. There is the possibility of very heavy rainfall in isolated places,” the IMD said.
The IMD also added that light to moderate rain was anticipated in various locations in the Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Una, Hamirpur, and Mandi districts of the State.
“Light to moderate rainfall likely to occur in the districts of Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Una, Hamirpur, and Mandi in many places. Light rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in the rest of the districts during the next 2 to 3 hours,” IMD said.

Trains stopped at Chiplun as Vashishthi river breaches danger mark
Train services of Konkan Railway were stopped at Chiplun in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra on Wednesday afternoon as the Vashishthi river crossed the danger mark following incessant rains, an official said.
L K Verma, chief public relations officer of Konkan Railway, told PTI that water was above the danger mark on the Vashishthi (also spelled as Vashishti) railway bridge, and hence train services were stopped as a precautionary measure.
The Kochuveli-Indore Express has been stopped at Chiplun station, he said, adding that no train is struck on the Vashishthi railway bridge.

Train services between Kalyan and Kasara section in Maharashtra’s Thane district adjoining Mumbai were stopped on Wednesday afternoon due to a track changing point failure at Kalyan station after rains in the area, a senior railway official said.
The Central Railway also said it has diverted some mail and express trains via Diva-Panvel-Karjat route and Daund-Manmad route, besides short-termination and cancellation of a few trains between Mumbai and Pune.

Heavy rains in six districts of Marathwada
Heavy rainfall was recorded in six out of eight districts of central Maharashtra’s Marathwada region, officials said on Wednesday.
No heavy rains were reported in Aurangabad and Latur districts.
As many as 43 circles — each circle comprising several villages — recorded rainfall of 65 mm or more on Tuesday.
Limbgaon circle in Nanded district recorded the highest rainfall of 153.50 mm in a single day.
It was followed by Golegaon circle which received 133.50 mm rainfall. As many as nine circles received rainfall of more than 100 mm.

Heavy rains in Thane and Palghar; several people from low-lying areas evacuated
Heavy rains pounded Maharashtra’s Thane and Palghar districts on Wednesday, causing water-logging in many localities following which more than 250 families from low-lying areas in Thane were shifted to safer places, officials said.
Schools and colleges were closed in many parts of Palghar district in view of the heavy downpour.
A number of rivers including the Ulhas (Thane), Amba, Savitri and Patalganga (in neighbouring Raigad) were in spate, they said.
Some bridges on the Ulhas, Kalu and Murbadi rivers in Thane were inundated, the officials said.
As many as 200 families from Sonivali and Hendrepada in Badlapur town of Thane have been shifted to safer places following heavy downpour and flooding in those areas, District Information Officer Nandkumar Waghmare said.
Around 60 families from Morya Nagar in Kalyan taluka and inmates of a senior citizens’ home in Ambarnath area of Thane were also shifted to safer places, he said.

Flood-like situation in Ratnagiri and Raigad districts due to heavy rains
Overnight heavy downpours have caused several rivers in Maharashtra’s Konkan region to swell and trigger flood-like situations, prompting authorities to relocate people in a few towns and villages to safer areas, said officials on Wednesday.
With more rains expected in coastal Maharashtra in the next couple of days, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar instructed officials to relocate people in several parts of Chiplun town of Ratnagiri district due to the rising level of Vashisthi river.
Of the six major rivers in Raigad district, Savitri and Patalganaga were flowing above the danger mark, said officials. The water levels in Kundalika and Amba rivers have reached the “alert” mark, while Gadhi and Ulhas were flowing close to the alert mark in the morning, as per the district administrations.
Due to torrential showers, the water from Patalganga river has entered Aapta and Rasayani. In Mahad too, water from Savitri has inundated low-lying areas.
In Ratnagiri district, Jagbudi and Vashisthi have turned ferocious due to heavy rains. Vashishti was flowing above the “alert” mark and waterlogging was reported in some low-lying areas along the river, officials said.
Deputy CM Pawar held a review meeting here in Mumbai and later discussed the situation with Ratnagiri district collector M Devender Singh. Pawar asked Singh to relocate people living near the Vashishti river as a precautionary measure.

Death toll in Kathua rises to five
Five people, including three children, were killed after heavy rains triggered landslides and left several houses damaged in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said. Deputy Commissioner, Kathua, Rakesh Minhas ordered an immediate ex-gratia relief of ₹50,000 to the kin of the deceased.

Heavy showers batter Saurashtra, south Gujarat; 345 mm rains in Sutrapada town in 14 hours

Large parts of Gujarat, including Rajkot, Surat and Gir Somnath districts, received heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday, creating a flood-like situation at several places and throwing normal life out of gear.
Sutrapada taluka in Gir Somnath district received 345 mm rainfall, the highest in the state, in just 14 hours since 6 am on Tuesday, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas in the State, especially in some districts of Saurashtra and south Gujarat regions, during the next few days.
The state administration reviewed the preparedness to deal with the situation arising out of heavy showers and the overall monsoon condition in Gujarat.
Dhoraji taluka of Rajkot district received around 250 mm rainfall during the 14-hour period since 6 am with 145 mm showers recorded in just two hours, SEOC said.

Schools closed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda due to heavy rainfall
The authorities closed all government and private schools in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district for the students on Wednesday in view of the heavy rainfall.
“It has been decided that all Government/Private schools of District Doda will remain closed for students on July 19 for the well-being of our students in light of the inclement weather conditions,” DC Doda said.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir has caused landslides in several places.The National Highway-44 in Ramban district was blocked due to shooting stones and mud slush, said an official on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner Ramban took to his Twitter handle and informed that NH-44 was blocked in several areas due to mud slush and shooting stones and that people should avoid travelling until road clearance works were executed.
“NH-44 is blocked at certain places due to mud slush and shooting stones. People are advised to avoid travelling, till road clearance works are executed,” tweeted Deputy Commissioner Ramban.

Bridge washed away in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh after heavy rainfall and cloudbursts
As heavy rainfall and cloudbursts hit Uttarakhand, a vehicle and a bridge got washed away in Nachti drain on the Lipulekh border of border tehsil Dharchula of Pithoragarh district, breaking the connection of Om Parvat Kalapani with Gunji.
Amid the increase in water levels in the drain on Tuesday night, the road from Gujin towards Kalapani has been also destroyed. To avoid adverse consequences, the Army had informed Kali Pani Post about the sudden rise of water but till then the drain created havoc.

Mata Vaishno Devi yatra on new track suspended as Katra witnesses record rainfal
The new track to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine has been closed for pilgrims in view of landslide threat as Katra town in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district received the heaviest rainfall in past 43 years.
Chopper service to the shrine has also been suspended because of inclement weather. However, pilgrims can reach the shrine atop Trikuta Hills will continue on the old track, officials said on Wednesday.
“Yatra has been suspended on the new track due to the threat of landslides. However, the yatra is going on the old track,” Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), Anshul Garg told PTI.
Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine, received 315.4 mm of rain in 24 hours.
“This is the heaviest rainfall since 1980. On July 31, 2019, Katra received 292.4 mm of rain,” an official of the weather department said.

Several houses collapse after heavy rains in J&K’s Kathua, four killed
Four people were killed Wednesday and several others feared trapped after over half-a-dozen houses collapsed due to heavy rains in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police officer said.
A rescue operation, being supervised by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kathua Shivdeep Singh Jamwal, is underway in the affected villages of Bani tehsil, the officer said.
He said a house collapsed in Surjan village, killing two people while three are feared trapped.
Reports of house collapse were also received from several other villages in Bani tehsil, resulting in the death of two people, the officer said.

Heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand leads to rise in river water levels; SDRF teams on high alert
Incessant rainfall in the hilly and plain areas in Uttarakhand for the past nine days has resulted in an increase in water levels of the rivers and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been told to remain on high alert, authorities said on Wednesday.
As per SDRF officials, nine days of constant rain in Uttarakhand’s hilly and plain regions caused the rivers’ water levels to rise, subsequently, the SDRF personnel have been instructed to maintain a high degree of alertness.
“River Ganga is once again in spate as a result of constant rain that has been falling in the plains and hills of all of Uttarakhand for the past nine days, increasing the risk of flooding in the nearby areas. With the unexpected increase in the water level of river Ganga, there is a danger of flood in the coastal areas of Mayakund, Chandrabhaga, Chandreshwarnagar etc,” said officials.

Orange alert in Mumbai
The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Mumbai centre on Tuesday issued an ‘orange’ alert for Mumbai and Thane districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places on Wednesday.
It issued a ‘red’ alert for neighbouring Raigad and Palghar districts, forecasting heavy to very rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rain at isolated places.
A civic official said the IMD Mumbai in its daily weather forecast predicted “heavy rainfall in the city and suburbs with a possibility of very heavy rainfall at a few places” in the next 24 hours.
There will be a high tide of 4.23 meters in the sea at 1.23 pm, as per the local civic body.

Heavy rain in parts of Mumbai
Heavy rains lashed parts of Mumbai on Wednesday morning and the weather department has issued an ‘orange’ alert for the city, predicting heavy to very heavy showers at some places during the day.
Train services on the Panvel-Belapur Harbour Line route were affected to a “point failure” at Panvel at 9.40 am, Central Railway’s chief public relations officer Shivraj Manaspure said.
The official said train services on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)-Belapur route were running.
Many commuters of the Central railway claimed the trains were running 10-15 minutes late.
The Western Railway authorities said their services were normal.
There was no report of any major water-logging early in the morning, a civic official said.
Bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking were running as per their proper routes and there was no diversion, a civic official said.

Yamuna water level breaches danger mark amid rains in Delhi
The water level of the Yamuna in Delhi breached the danger mark again on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, morning, less than 12 hours after it dropped below the threshold, amid rains in the national capital and the upper reaches of the river.
The Central Water Commission’s data showed the water level reached 205.48 metres at 8 am. It is expected to rise to 205.72 metres by 6 pm.
